This video is intended to help anyone who bought one of these kits and is experiencing any of the 'getting started' issues that I faced - and eventually resolved.
Here's a complete list of the resources and steps I needed to get me started:
1. Assembly and wiring instructions - there weren't any in the box - but they can be found in the EleksDraw forum - here:
http://forum.eleksmaker.com/topic/16/...
2: Don't overtighten the screws that hold the carriage plate together - if you do, the linear bearings will be twisted out of alignment and the machine won't move properly - assemble the whole thing (but not the belt) - then move the carriage manually - if it doesn't glide easily, back off the screws holding the carriage plate together and try moving it again - only when it is gliding smoothly should you fit the belt. If you get the sliding smooth and easy, the belt doesn't need to be super-tight.
3: The assembly instructions show the belt being fitted while the carriage plate is still half-assembled - don't bother trying to do that - assemble the device, then thread the belt from back to front to back, then pull out two loops from each side, hook them around the motor spindles, then tighten the belt and lock it down.
4: figure out the routing of the servo cable (not in the instructions and not obvious) either by watching my videos (in this playlist), or this official one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeswY...
5: I assembled my pen lifting mechanism so that the long screw was resting on top of the servo horn - this means that the servo lifts the pen off the paper; gravity pushes the pen down onto the paper.
6: Add a weight to the pen to make it press properly against the paper - I just taped a battery to the top of my pen.
7: if the pen lifting slider rods aren't moving smoothly, rub them with an 8B or 4B pencil - the graphite will lubricate it.
8: Get EleksROM to update the firmware of your controller - if you have the problem of the movement being diagonal instead of straight, updating the firmware will fix it - download EleksROM from the forum here: http://forum.eleksmaker.com/topic/72/...
9: EleksROM won't work straight away - you need libusb0.dll - go to Sourceforge here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/libu... - extract the file named libusb0_x86.dll - rename it libusb0.dll and drop it into the same folder as the EleksROM program.
10: The EleksCAM application (for controlling the EleksDraw) only works properly if it is set to run as Administrator - if you don't know how to do that, look here: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/win...
11: if your servo just makes a horrible ratcheting sound when the machine runs, open the EleksCAM application, connect your EleksDraw, and in the 'Input GCODE' box, type A1 - click Send - this switches the device from Laser to Servo mode.
12: if you can't load SVG files via PicCarve, you might need to add in a file called SVG.dll - instructions here: http://forum.eleksmaker.com/topic/82/...
12: if you have further problems, there are solutions and helpful people on the EleksMaker forum - here: http://forum.eleksmaker.com/
